1. General

The Basic EMC Standards for Surge define the methods of  generating consistently reproducible surge voltages for test purposes. They specify generator and coupler/decoupler design and performance in sufficient detail to produce correlatable results between test sites.

While the Basic EMC Standard specifies how to perform Surge testing, the Generic, Product and Product Family Standards specify the test levels and pass/fail performance criteria.

IEC 61000-4-5 also includes climatic specification as follows:

Ambient temperature :               15°C to 35°C
Relative Humidity :                     10% to 75%
Atmospheric Pressure :              86kPa (860 mbar) to 106kPa (1060 mbar)

Other values may be specified in the test specification.

The surge test can be destructive to the EUT if adequate protection is not incorporated into the design. Therefore, this test should be carried out only after a successful burst ( EFT ) test.

2. Exposure Classes

The test level is set by the IEC / EN as a function of use and exposure class.

Class

Description

0

Well-protected electrical environment, often within a special room

1

Partly protected electrical environment

2

Electrical environment where cables are well separated, even at short runs

3

Electrical environment where cables run in parallel

4

Electrical environment where the interconnections are running as outdoor cables along with power cables, and cables are used for both electronic and electric circuits.

5

Electrical environment for electronic equipment connected to telecomunication cables and overhead power lines in a non-densely populated area

X

Special conditions specified in the product specification
